Summary of Goals and Objectives

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for 90% of liver cancer cases, the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. A higher incidence of HCC is observed in the Hispanic population, the largest demographic group in South Texas. More than two-thirds of all new cancers are diagnosed among individuals aged 60 years and older. Age is the primary risk factor for adult cancer and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a precursor for HCC. As such, elucidating how aging contributes to NASH and HCC risk will provide biomarkers for early detection and guide the development of novel prevention and treatment regimens.
