Neal Copeland received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Utah and was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, where he met his long-time collaborator and wife, Nancy Jenkins. They joined the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Singapore in 2006 where Neal served as Institute Director for part of his stay. They returned to the U.S. in 2011 and joined the Houston Methodist Research Institute where they were both CPRIT Scholars in Cancer Research. In 2017, they closed their lab and moved to the Department of Genetics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

For more than 35 years, they successfully modeled many different types of human disease in the mouse but have focused exclusively on cancer for the last 11 years. They have published more than 800 papers together and are both members of the National Academy of Sciences, USA.
