Dr. Kuang-Lei Tsai received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University, followed by a Ph.D. degree in 2009 from National Tsing-Hua University in Taiwan. From 2010 to 2017, Dr. Tsai performed postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, exploring the structures of macromolecular complexes responsible for conveying regulatory signals from DNA to RNA polymerase II. The main focus of his postdoctoral work was to utilize single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study Mediator, a large complex (MW > 1MDa) that plays an essential role in regulation of transcription initiation by acting as a bridge between DNA-binding transcription factors and the RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) transcription machinery.
