CPRIT’s prevention grant awards make it possible for proven cancer prevention strategies and early detection programs and services to reach many more Texans and ultimately decrease the personal and economic burden of cancer statewide. Ten percent of the total amount of money CPRIT awards each year is specifically devoted to delivering cancer prevention programs and services in Texas.

The CPRIT Prevention Grants Program funds programs and services in Texas that challenge the status quo through delivery of culturally appropriate and evidence-based information and services to the people of Texas. The goal of the prevention program is to fund projects that will have a measurable impact on public health in areas of the State in greatest need and ensure:
-
Texans receive culturally appropriate and accurate information, education, and referral services to reduce their risk of developing cancer
-
Texans receive state-of-the art preventive and screening services that could prevent or detect cancer as early as possible
-
Health professionals receive education and training that will improve their knowledge, skills, and practice behavior; and will ultimately improve the health of their patients
-
Cancer survivors receive evidence-based information and services that will lead to significant improvement in their quality of life
To address the diverse and often complex cancer prevention and control needs of the State, the prevention program focuses on projects that are innovative in delivery, results oriented, evidence-based, and non-duplicative. A priority is to reach individuals who are underinsured or uninsured and who are not eligible for services through other existing programs. In addition, programs are expected to leverage existing resources and to seek partnerships that will maximize reach into the community.
