State Cancer Institute Combats Rising Economic and Human Impact of Cancer

Texas residents unable to afford cancer prevention services will have increased access to critical breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening as a result of grants awarded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Counseling for tobacco cessation services as well as a survivorship program were also funded by the Institute at their quarterly board meeting held today in Austin, TX.

Long-time San Antonio Businessman and Rancher Mark E. Watson, Jr. Appointed CPRIT Governing Board

Texas House of Representatives’ Speaker Joe Straus recently announced the appointment of Mark E. Watson, Jr. to the Oversight Committee of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Mr. Watson, one of three appointees selected by the Speaker of the House to serve on the CPRIT Board, will fill a term that expires January 31, 2017. Members of the Oversight Committee guide the work of the Institute, which awards grants to expedite innovation in cancer research, help bring lifesaving cancer products to Texans and expand evidence-based cancer prevention capabilities across the state.

CPRIT AWARD RECIPIENT RECEIVES FDA APPROVAL

AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) congratulates Apollo Endosurgery, one of the Institute’s first company investment grant recipients, for receiving approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin marketing its SuMO endoscopic tissue access and resection system.  The SuMO system is designed to allow the scarless surgical removal of certain precancerous gastrointestinal lesions during endoscopy procedures that include treatment for colorectal cancer.
