CPRIT Names Chief Executive Officer
CPRIT Oversight Committee Hires Interim Executive Director Wayne R. Roberts to Lead Institute
AUSTIN — At its meeting today, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Oversight Committee named Wayne R. Roberts chief executive officer. Roberts has held the position of interim executive director of the agency since December 2012 when he was hired to stabilize CPRIT and work with the legislature to strengthen the agency's governance and accountability.
"Mr. Roberts has demonstrated the ability to lead CPRIT during a challenging and critical time in the agency's history, and that leadership enabled CPRIT to reestablish its commitment to advancing the fight against cancer in Texas," said Dr. William Rice, chair of the CPRIT Oversight Committee. "Mr. Roberts' success with CPRIT and past experience in the public and health care sectors gives him the unique skills and perspective to guide this agency into the future. The Oversight Committee is pleased to retain him, and Texans should feel confident CPRIT has a qualified CEO who is dedicated to the agency's mission.
Prior to his positions at CPRIT, Roberts served as associate vice president for public policy at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Roberts' previous experience includes several senior level positions under Governor Perry, deputy and acting state budget director under Governor Bush, and special assistant for budget and human services for Lt. Governor Bullock as well as 18 years with the Legislative Budget Board.
Roberts currently serves on the State Pension Review Board and is a lifetime member of the National Association of State Budget Officers. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from The University of Texas at Austin with and a Master of Public Affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.
