Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Awards $78 Million in New Grants

(AUSTIN) — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded 55 new grants totaling over $78 million consisting of 41 academic research grant awards, 10 prevention awards, and 4 product development research awards. 

“These awards reflect CPRIT's established priorities to invest in childhood cancer research, address population and geographic disparities, and recruit top cancer research talent to our academic institutions,” said Wayne Roberts, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer. “I'm excited about all the awardees, particularly those in San Antonio, a region that continues expand their cancer research and prevention prowess. San Antonio is poised to have an even greater impact across the Texas cancer-fighting ecosystem.”

Addressing childhood cancer is a top priority for CPRIT with 12 percent of our portfolio going to pediatric cancer research, which is proportionately three times more than the national rate. Earlier this month in Dallas, the Carson Leslie Foundation and CPRIT gathered the best minds in pediatric brain cancer research to chart ways forward for increasing collaboration.

Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas Recruits 200th CPRIT Scholar

(AUSTIN) — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) announced the recruitment of its 200^th CPRIT Scholar to Texas. Theresa Guise, M.D., a leading physician scientist in the study of skeletal complications of cancer, including bone metastasis, bone loss and muscle weakness has accepted a CPRIT Established Investigator Award to join The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from Indiana University School of Medicine.

"CPRIT Scholars have bolstered the life sciences ecosystem in Texas, bringing talented individuals and their scientific knowledge to build a critical mass in the fight against cancer,” said Dr. James Willson, CPRIT Chief Scientific Officer. “I welcome Dr. Guise to Texas, and she joins a long line of researchers who have grounded themselves here and continue to provide invaluable contributions for better understanding the science behind cancer and how it can be successfully treated."

AUSTIN — The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today awarded 10 new academic research grants totaling $38 million to recruit eminent cancer researchers to Texas.

“As overwhelmingly affirmed earlier this month, voters want Texas to be the center of world-class cancer research,” said Wayne Roberts, CPRIT Chief Executive Officer. “These recruits will assist CPRIT achieve Texans’ aspirations.”
